I was very impressed recently when a friend of mine showed me a feature on his new phone. It was a little program/service that could take a sample of a song and tell you the artist, album, track name etc of it within seconds. All you needed to do was hold the phone up to the sound source and it would record a 20 second sample, and away it went. It also worked with all the variations of the track, such as live versions, remixes and even a recording on YouTube.
I decided to look into this a bit further and found out that it is a product named GraceNote Music Id, and even better it has an SDK that developers can download and play around with (http://www.gracenote.com/developer/).
I have applied for a Non-Commercial License so I can have a play around with it. If it turns out to be as good as it first looks, it could be a very handy addition to any application that involves digital music.
