Planning XP - My favourite quotes

I've been re-reading the 'Planning Extreme Programming" book written by Kent Beck and Martin Fowler lately, and  I've picked out a few quotes from what I've read so far that I think highlight some key points to remember, or that simply amused me.  Either way, I think its good reading.  Here they are:

Keep the plan simple, otherwise they won't be maintained:

"Plans must be both simple to build and simple to keep up-to-date".

Expect change.  If everything always goes to plan, be afraid, be very afraid:

"Events happen. Plans change.  If things seems to be going exactly according to plan, that's usually a sign of trouble...Keep your plans honest, and expect them to always change".

Be courageous:

"If these fears are not put on the table and dealt with, then developers and customer each try to protect themselves by building walls."

Create an honest and non-judgemental culture:

"If we are going to develop well, we must create a culture that makes it possible for programmers and customers to acknowledge their fears...".

Let people do what they know best:

"Business people make business decisions.  Technical people make technical decisions"

And finally, my favourite so far - don't run yourself into the ground:

"When you are overloaded, don't think of it as not having enough time; think of it as having too much to do."

If you haven't read this book, I suggest you go out and get a copy to read.  If you have, please feel free to contribute any more thoughts or quotes from the book that you enjoyed.

I think what they have quoted is absolutely right because if you have a plan, be it short term or long term, it must be plain simple to keep, do and maintain. I haven’t seen many complicated plans to succeed as they were supposed to be. The main reason is because complicated plans demand complicated efforts which aren’t always possible. Hence it must be noted that we should always keep our plans simple yet effective and hence when a different event arises, there isn’t much we need to do!
